Summer Matterhorn: The Peak Above the Clouds

About

The Matterhorn, also known as Monte Cervino, is one of the most iconic and recognizable peaks in the Swiss Alps. Standing at an impressive height of 4,478 meters (14,692 feet), it straddles the border between Switzerland and Italy, commanding attention with its distinct pyramid shape and sheer rock faces.

This photo was captured in June 2023 from a small viewing platform accessible via the elevator from the funicular station Zermatt-Sunnegga-Blauherd-Rothorn in Zermatt, Switzerland. The weather on that day was as beautiful as the Matterhorn itself, offering clear views of the majestic peak amidst a serene alpine landscape.

Interesting fact: The Matterhorn was one of the last major Alpine peaks to be conquered. The first successful ascent of the Matterhorn’s summit took place on July 14, 1865, by a team led by British mountaineer Edward Whymper. This historic climb marked a significant milestone in the history of mountaineering and added to the allure of the Matterhorn as one of the world’s most coveted peaks.
